Great DTF printing starts with a great file

DTF printing can reproduce detailed, full-color artwork, but it prints the information contained in the submitted file. A clean production file reduces delays, prevents unexpected backgrounds and sizing errors, and gives fine details the best chance of surviving printing, cutting, pressing, and washing.

A transparent, high-resolution PNG is the safest general recommendation. Other formats should only be used when the current product uploader explicitly supports them.

Resolution Requirements

Use 300 PPI at the final print size

Resolution describes how many pixels are available within each printed inch. For example, a design that will print 10 inches wide should be approximately 3,000 pixels wide. A 12-inch-wide design should be approximately 3,600 pixels wide. The same pixel file becomes less detailed as its physical print size increases.

Changing a document label from 72 PPI to 300 PPI without rebuilding or resampling from a better source does not create missing detail. Screenshots, social-media downloads, thumbnails, and images copied from websites are commonly too small for large apparel prints. When the original is limited, print it smaller, recreate it, or obtain the source file.

Transparent Background

Remove everything you do not want printed

Transparent pixels tell the print workflow where no design should appear. If your PNG includes a white rectangle, that rectangle may print with white ink—even on a white shirt. JPEG files cannot contain transparency, which makes them unreliable for isolated logos and cutout artwork.

Inspect the exported PNG over both a light and dark background. Look for faint boxes, white fringes, partially erased pixels, soft shadows, and stray marks outside the design. Zoom in around hair, distressed edges, glow effects, and antialiased curves.

RGB vs CMYK

Prepare color for a profiled DTF workflow

Many DTF workflows accept RGB files and convert them through printer-specific RIP software, while the physical printer outputs CMYK inks plus white. Follow the current guidance displayed by DTFZoo’s uploader. Repeatedly converting between color spaces can shift saturated colors and does not guarantee a closer match.

Displays emit light; printed transfers reflect light. Monitor calibration, garment color, white underbase, ink, film, curing, heat, and finishing all influence the result. For an exacting brand color or major bulk order, approve a physical pressed test instead of relying exclusively on a screen preview.

Vector vs Raster

Understand what can scale cleanly

Vector artwork

Vector files describe shapes mathematically, so logos and lettering can scale without pixelation. Before handing off AI, SVG, EPS, or vector PDF files, outline fonts, embed linked assets, expand unsupported effects, remove hidden objects, and verify the artboard dimensions. Photographs and raster textures placed inside a vector file remain raster images and still require adequate resolution.

Raster artwork

PNG, JPEG, and flattened PSD artwork is built from pixels. It is predictable when exported at 300 PPI at final dimensions, but enlarging it beyond those dimensions reduces effective resolution. Use PNG when transparency matters. Keep the layered source separately so the production export can be corrected without editing a flattened low-resolution copy.

Lines & Text

Make small details durable enough to print and wear

Minimum line thickness

There is no universal line minimum for every artwork size, color, fabric, and effect. Avoid hairlines, isolated single-pixel elements, tiny distressed flecks, and extremely narrow negative gaps. Fine light-colored details on dark garments depend on a clean white underbase and enough adhesive area to remain stable.

Inspect the file at actual size. If a detail is essential, make it intentionally visible and robust instead of relying on the printing process to preserve a nearly invisible stroke.

Minimum text size

Judge text by its printed stroke thickness and open space, not only the point size in design software. Bold, open sans serif lettering can remain readable smaller than a thin script with tight counters. Print a paper proof at 100% scale and confirm that letters such as a, e, o, and R remain open.

Outline or rasterize fonts in the final file so missing fonts cannot alter the design. When wording matters, readability should win over fitting more characters into the same area.

Know what to look for at 100% zoom

Print-ready

Edges are clean, curves are smooth, text is readable, transparency is intentional, gradients are free of banding, and the pixel dimensions support the final physical size.

Needs review

The design looks acceptable when zoomed out but shows slight softness, thin details, small text, or limited resolution at the planned print dimensions.

Not print-ready

Visible pixelation, JPEG blocks, blur, white halos, accidental backgrounds, clipped effects, jagged curves, missing fonts, or artwork enlarged from a thumbnail.

Common Artwork Mistakes

Catch these problems before production

Wrong physical size

The file has enough pixels but is placed at the wrong width or height. Always verify actual inches, not only how large the preview looks.

Fake transparency

A checkerboard or white background is part of the image instead of true transparent pixels. Inspect the exported PNG in a separate viewer.

Low-resolution source

A small logo was enlarged or a screenshot was used. Changing its resolution label cannot recreate the original curves and detail.

White edge halos
